What a waste!

We produce monumental amounts of trash and our trash, in turn, hurts our health by damaging the land, air and water which supports all life, including our own.

Globally

  • 99% of the stuff we harvest, mine, process, transport – 99% of the stuff we run through this production system is trashed within six months
  • 33% of all food produced for human consumption is wasted – approximately 1.3 billion tonnes per year

And here

  • Each UK household is responsible for over 1 tonne of waste annually
  • UK households dispose over 4 million tonnes of food and drink waste annually
  • Across the UK recycling is only at around 44% (only 33% of e-waste!)

It does not have to be this way.

Less trash, more hope.

You can take a few simple steps for a better way to live.

Reduce

  • Steer clear of goods in a box, wrapper, throw-away bag, plastic container, tin can
  • Substitute bottled water with filtered water; make sparking water with home carbonation
  • Carry everything in reusable bags from home
  • Avoid delivery food orders
  • Cut your food waste by thinking more before you prepare
  • Compost raw food and garden waste (see wlcomposting.co.uk)

Reuse

  • Avoid collecting disposable stuff, BYO
  • Buy products in bulk and refill reusable containers
  • Repair – throw away the idea of replacing
  • Give away generously – donate stuff (e.g. Oxfam) or food (e.g. Olio)
  • List for sale (e.g. ebay, Shpock, Gumtree, craigslist)

Recycle

  • Make sure you separate your trash properly
  • Remember e-waste is critical!

Something to chew on…

The meat that we savour habitually is usually produced by breeding and killing animals cruelly on an industrial scale.

Animals are individuals with feelings, families and friendships; living beings, just like us, that are entitled to live happy and free. Just because we can factory farm them does not mean we should. Ethics aside, the farming methods we use pollute air and water systematically and waste resources, thus hurting our environment. And last but not least, meat can hurt our health; research has linked the overconsumption of meat to clogged arteries, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and diabetes.

It does not have to be this way.

Less meat, more hope.

Start on the vegan path! Experiment with removing meat and fish gradually. You will rebalance your relationship with the living beings that share our natural habitat; you will protect the nature that surrounds us and supports us; and you will reduce risks to your health.

A plant-based diet can be highly nutritious and easy.
